It’s the 1st December, so in my book it is totally legit to get your Christmas tree up and decorated – let’s break out the Mariah Carey and start swigging the eggnog. Ho, ho, ho. Rather generously, this year we’ve been gifted a beautiful 5ft Fraser Fir from those lovely people over at Pines And Needles, which I was invited to pick out last week at a VIP evening hosted at their Wimbledon Park Store. After much perusal and being easily persuaded on the Fraser Fir – because they literally smell like the epitome of Christmas and have very very little needle drop – I selected this beauty and it was delivered the very next day to my door, by a lovely chap in a kilt. Yes, a kilt. And a Santa hat. More on that momentarily. So, I’ve now got to keep this gorgeous specimen alive for the next 25 days and beyond (we usually take our tree down on the 6th January as is tradition), I’m thankful then to those in the know at Pines And Needles for these top tips on keeping your Christmas tree healthy for the duration.Prepare the trunk: if you buy your tree from Pines And Needles they already do this for you, but if not then just before you install the tree you’re advised to saw off the bottom 1″ (3cm) of the trunk. This creates a fresh cut and opens the pores up in the bark, allowing the tree to drink water.
They need routine: try not to expose the tree to sudden temperature changes.
Try to keep your tree away from heat sources: heat dries the tree out faster, so the further you can position away from a radiator the fresher the tree will remain. Sadly by the radiator in our living room is the only place we can put our tree, but we’re keeping it topped up with water…
Water your tree: place your tree in plain water, ideally in a specially designed Christmas tree stand. Standing the tree in soil or sand will block the pores in the bark, preventing the tree from being able to drink its H2O.
Keep on watering! Keep your tree topped up with water, it may drink 2-3 pints a day depending on its size and your central heating settings!
Pines And Needles are premier Christmas Tree Growers & Retailers – a British brand with a Scottish heritage. The company was founded by two brothers from their family farm in Scotland and today has over 30 pop up stores (many across London) and also sells online.
You can Reserve & Collect in person or arrange for delivery to your door – and yes, it’s true, the delivery drivers are a fleet of kilted Santa hat wearing hotties (get your mistletoe ready!). Their trees, fresh from the Highlands, range from giant firs to teeny spruces and each store is re-stocked each morning with freshly cut trees delivered straight from their plantations. They also sell accessories, decorations, garlands and wreaths, and lights.
So this Christmas, if you want something in common with the legendary Sir Elton John, Madonna, One Direction and Noel Gallagher and a Christmas number one isn’t on the cards, then get your hands on a fabulous fresh tree from Pines And Needles and get the festive season started in style.
